Claude Dashboards Shows the Query Behind Every Number. Here Is How I Would Check It Before Anyone Trusts It

Anthropic put live dashboards in Claude beta, with a query shown behind each chart. A practical review checklist for definitions, freshness, access, and sharing before a team relies on a number.

By Harel Asaf·AI Builder·Tel Aviv

Claude Dashboards is a useful idea because it shows its work. Anthropic says you can click a number to see the query behind it, and each chart shows when its data was last refreshed.

That helps. It does not finish the job.

A visible query is evidence you can inspect. Someone still has to inspect it. The question for a team is who checks the first version before it gets shared as fact.

What Anthropic announced

On October 8, Anthropic announced Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion in beta. Dashboards connects to a data platform such as Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, or Snowflake, or to a CRM like Salesforce. You ask a question in plain language, and Claude builds a dashboard that Anthropic says stays current as the data changes.

Anthropic positions it for quick, exploratory questions, such as comparing this week's signups with last month's. It says Dashboards works alongside BI and analytics tools, and lets you send a dashboard to tools like Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, or Sigma.

Availability matters. Anthropic says Dashboards is in beta on paid plans and Motion is in beta on Team and Enterprise. For Enterprise admins, Dashboards and Motion are off by default and can be turned on in Organization settings under Artifacts. Digital Trends and Android Authority report the same plan limits.

Claude Motion is a separate feature. Anthropic says it writes code that animates your text, charts, shapes, and images, and does not use a video generation model. This article is about Dashboards.

Why "shows the query" is a good start

Most wrong numbers in a dashboard are not arithmetic mistakes. They are definition mistakes. A filter was missed. A table was joined the wrong way. "Active user" meant something different from what the team assumed.

A visible query puts that on the table. Anyone who can read it can ask the right question. A person who cannot read SQL can ask a colleague who can.

Anthropic's own framing is that Claude makes the first version and you decide what gets shared. That is the right division. The rest of this article is about making the "you decide" step concrete.

A review checklist before a number is shared

I would not review the chart. I would review five things behind it.

1. The definition. Write the metric in one sentence. "Signups" might mean created accounts, verified accounts, or paid accounts. Compare that sentence to the query.

2. The filters and joins. Look for date ranges, test accounts, deleted rows, and duplicate keys. Duplicates inflate totals quietly.

3. The source table. Confirm it is the table your team treats as the source of truth, not a copy or a staging table.

4. The freshness. Anthropic says each chart shows when its data was last refreshed. Check that time against how fast the underlying data really changes.

5. The comparison. Pick one number you already trust from your existing BI tool, and see whether the dashboard agrees.

None of this is specific to Claude. It is the normal review for any new dashboard. What changes is the speed. A dashboard that took a ticket and a week now takes a prompt, so the review step has to be deliberate, or it will be skipped.

Access and sharing are the real risk surface

A dashboard can make data easy to ask about. It can also make data easy to pass around.

Anthropic says people can share slides, designs, dashboards, and animations with people outside their organization, or with anyone who has the link, if the admin allows it. That setting deserves a decision before launch, not after.

Questions to settle first:

  • Which data connectors are enabled, and with what permissions on the warehouse side?
  • Does the dashboard use the asking person's access, or something broader? I did not find this stated in the sources I reviewed, so check it.
  • Who can share outside the organization, and is the link public?
  • Where does a shared dashboard stop updating, and who owns it after the author leaves?

If an answer is unknown, test it with a low-risk dataset before pointing the tool at anything sensitive.

Keep it for exploration

Anthropic describes Dashboards as good for quick, exploratory questions. That is a sensible place to start.

A number in an exploratory dashboard can open a conversation. A number in a board deck, a pricing decision, or a customer report needs a stronger trail: an agreed definition, a named owner, and a reviewed query.

A simple rule: label dashboards as exploratory until someone has reviewed the query and written down the definition. Then promote the ones that earn it into your normal BI tool, which Anthropic says the feature is designed to work alongside.

A small pilot

Pick one dataset where you already know the answers.

1. Ask Claude for three dashboards on questions you can verify elsewhere.

2. Read each query and compare the result with your existing report.

3. Note every difference, and whether the cause was a definition, a filter, or stale data.

4. Try one ambiguous question, such as "active customers," and see how the definition is handled.

5. Check the refresh time against a known data change.

This is a recommended test, not a result I observed. I have not run Claude Dashboards for this article. The point of the pilot is to learn where your team's own definitions are loose before a tool makes them look official.

Frequently asked questions

What is Claude Dashboards?

A beta feature that connects Claude to a data platform or CRM, builds a dashboard from a plain-language question, and, according to Anthropic, keeps it current as the data changes.

Who can use it?

Anthropic says Dashboards is in beta on paid plans. Motion is in beta on Team and Enterprise. Enterprise admins must turn both on.

Can I see how a number was calculated?

Anthropic says you can click any number to see the query behind it, or ask Claude to explain it.

Does it replace my BI tool?

Anthropic says it works alongside BI and analytics tools and is suited to quick, exploratory questions. It lists tools you can send a dashboard to.

What should I check first?

The metric definition, the filters and joins, the source table, and the refresh time. Then compare one number with a report you already trust.

Is sharing limited to my team?

Anthropic says dashboards can be shared outside your organization or by link if your admin allows it. Check that setting before use.

Is Claude Motion the same thing?

No. Motion turns ideas and reports into editable animations built as code. It is a separate beta feature.
